RivaFLVencoder is a software which will able you to convert .flv files (Flash Video) into avi and mpg files. The conversion facilitates you to play the video in various systems including the iPod.
Drawback however is that some times, audio can’t be transcoded to the target format. Hitrec also explains how to overcome this draw back using another software, thats what makes his tutorial one of the best.

On Linux, MPlayer will play them and, all things considered, that’s much better than VLC. (VLC is more likely to crash and also less commonly installed on Linux systems) Xine will also play the video though for some reason, it can’t play the audio. (which is odd since, according to MPlayer, it’s just MPEG-2 Layer 3 audio) Either way, I’m pretty sure they all use the ffmpeg libraries as their video decoding backend.
The nice thing is that, if you want to transcode, anything that can be played by MPlayer can be transcoded using MEncoder. (not to mention demuxed or dumped to file using MPlayer command-line options)
The transcode tool may also be able to read it using one of it’s input modules, but I haven’t used it. Worst case scenario there would be using the MPlayer input module.

I just checked and it can also be done using the ffmpeg command-line tool, but I don’t have the time to experiment until I find a good set of options.
Be sure to specify “-acodec copy” so it doesn’t degrade the quality of the MP3 audio stream by decoding and then re-encoding.
According to a little research I did, FLV uses a video codec known as Sorenson Spark (a tweaked version of H.264 according to the person who reverse-engineered them to add support to ffmpeg). I can’t say for certain, but this suggests it may be possible to losslessly convert FLV files to something that the QuickTime player will play.

SUPER, as mentioned above, works for me. It allows conversion of many file-types, including .FLVs. I transcoded an .FLV into an H.264/AAC compliant .MP4 with it and it turned out fine. There are many options but it’s also quite simple, at the same time. It’s a GUI for several commandline apps, including FFMPEG.
The main problem is a glitch which doesn’t allow the first drop-down menu to show without some creative click-and-dragging in it’s area of the screen. Once beyond that, however, I’ve found it to be quite a capable app..

You don’t need to pay for or “try” anything to do the conversion.
On linux (and windows too) you can get the lates ffmepg from svn, build it and use it to do the conversion. This should do the trick on linux:
bash$ svn checkout svn://svn.mplayerhq.hu/mplayer/trunk/ ffmpeg
bash$ cd ffmepg; ./configure; make; sudo make install
bash$ ffmpeg -i input.flv -aspect 4:3 -ab 56 -ar 22050 -b 500 -s 320×240 -y output.avi
Note: you will need to have make, gcc, and g++ installed on your system to build ffmpeg. If you are using debian or a debian based system you can use the following command to install make, gcc, and g++.

there are many free flv converter now, but most of them are for windows os. i have a imac, i need some video converter for mac os x. i find the website: http://www.macflvconverters.com, the converter works well, but is that ok to order this mac converter?
