No hierarchy, no bureaucracy, no hassles… just the sun, the sand, the sea, cinema and more. It is time again for the third Bring Your Own Film Festival (BYOFF) on the Puri beach.
BYOFF-2006, to be held from February 21 to 25, will be more than just a film festival — you can sing, dance, showcase your paintings, sculptures, photographs, discuss ideas, share thoughts and experiences, or just laze around. There is no selection, no jury and no
awards for the films. The festival is taking shape on the Internet like the previous years. A filmmaker can log on to www.byofilmfestival.com and register his film. All types of movies are welcome.
Bring Your Own Film Festival (BYOFF) is an annual event held during February every year on Puri beach. To call it just a film festival is to limit its unique magical quality. It’s a festival without hierarchy, competition, juries and awards where not only filmmakers but also artists from other fields like music, theatre, painting and photography are encouraged to participate and show their work.In short, BYOFF can be best described as an informal and intimate gathering of artists with films in the backdrop where screenings go on early into the morning hours- first, inside makeshift tents and then in the open air after sun down. For filmmakers, it has been an alternative platform ever since its first edition in the year 2004. The idea is to have a festival away from the oppressive atmosphere of bureaucratic control of big cities and where just about anybody – with or without films – could participate.
The participants of BYOFF themselves are the volunteers and the organizers of its future editions. And the mood of the festival is that of a no holds barred carnival where the sea and its sand provide the right ambience to lift the spirits of every one present. Yeah, for five days and five nights.
Apart from making arrangements for the screening, this time the organisers have decided to put up a stall for the filmmakers to help them attract prospective buyers. The offer is open to filmmakers who want to screen their films or have screened their films in the earlier editions of BYOFF. Those unable to attend can send copies of their screened films to the organisers by February 10. Unsold copies and the proceeds of the sale will be sent to them.
Space will be provided for artists who want to exhibit their works on the sidelines of BYOFF. They can send requests to byoffpuri@gmail.com giving details of their works and the space required.
