Discovery networks Asia and Nokia come together to provide initiative to new filmmakers. The MobileFilmMakers(MFM) Awards is in its second cycle around after the first edition came to its successful conclusion in December 2005 with Janice Yu emerging as the grand prize winner. The MFM initiative, started in 2005 aimed at empowering cell phone users around the globe with knowledge and technology to exhibit their talents.
The contest, open to participants from around Asia entices participants with a grand prize of USD$10,000. Apart from amateur film makers the competition also lures seasoned young photographers by tempting them with a chance to work at Discovery Networks Asia for a three-month period, during which he or she will be involved in the process of documentary filmmaking.
"The response to the First Time Mobile FilmMakers 2005 Awards and the quality of the entries received shows that anyone with basic knowledge of how a mobile phone works is able to shoot their own mobile film and capture the world around them. With Discovery's expertise in documentary filmmaking coupled with Nokia's technology leadership in imaging, we have launched a new genre in Asia – mobile filmmaking,” said James Gibbons, senior vice president of programming and creative services, Discovery Networks Asia.
Nokia also provides helpful hints, photography tutorials and basic course in photography at the official website mobifilms.net Available at the site are exclusive clips produced by professional film makers from Asia experimenting with this new genre. The site also features forums for participants to discuss and exchange ideas and also learn from celebrity filmmakers like Kelvin Tong, director of “The Maid” and Tan Pin Pin multiple award winner, director of “Moving House.”To participate in the Mobile FilmMakers 2006 Awards, participants are invited to log on to mobifilms and send in a brief written description of not more than 300 words, on "My Discovery". The written description may also be accompanied by a maximum of five photos in JPEG format with a maximum file size of 100K each, or a video clip 30 seconds in duration in 3PG, WMV, MOV, MPEG, or AVI format. The contest is open to individuals from Australia, Cambodia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam and the closing date for submissions is Friday June 30.
