FireFox Hacks

If you are a Firefox user, you might be interested in this post about hidden functionality in it. Firefox uses a file stored within the application for hidden functionality instead of the normal preference files.
These are the steps to access the hidden settings in Firefox:

Open a new firefox tab and type about:config in the address bar. You will get a warning message, just past it and continue. Now you want to insert a new variable and to access hidden settings. To do this type the string in the search bar and double click on the setting or right click on it and then on “Modify”. To access your new settings you will need to restart Firefox.

  • browser.urlbar.clickSelectsAll
When this setting is marked as true, as it does by default, clicking on the address bar will automatically select it. You can change it to false and it won’t happen anymore.
  • browser.tabs.closeButtons
This changes the position of the “close” button. You have different options. 0 for the tab that’s currently opened, 1 for all tabs (this is the default option), 2 removes all “close” buttons and 3 places the button on the right side of the tab bar.
  • browser.search.openintab
This option is extremely useful. It will make any search you make from the search box in the top left open in a new window.
  • browser.urlbar.maxRichResults
By using this you can change the quantity of results appearing in your search bar. The best is to use a large number, even though this will result in a scroll bar. The default number is 12.
  • browser.fixup.alternate.suffix
This gives you the chance to change the automatic suffix to the one your country uses if your country doesn’t have .com domains. If, for example you are in Japan, you can change from .com to .jp
  • browser.tabs.loadFolderAndReplace
By default, every setting will be replaced when you open a folder of bookmarks. Changing this to false will replace only the bookmark you are in

If you open a whole folder or of bookmarks it will replace every setting. If you change this to false it will only replace the one you are in and the bookmarks after it.

  • accessibility.typeaheadfind.casesensitive
This is not really a hidden setting since you can also access it from the search bar; but changing it to 1 will add case sensitivity to your search bar.
  • browser.tabs.tabMinWidth
This changes the tab´s with. You can set the minimum to a smaller value and all tabs will be smaller too, the same thing for making them larger. Making them smaller is more useful though, in case you wish to have many tabs opened and be able to see them on your screen.
  • browser.chrome.toolbar_tips
You can disable the yellow box that appears when you hover over a bookmark placed in the bookmarks bar by changing this to false.
  • layout.spellcheckDefault
This is a default option for spell checking. Changing it´s value to 2 will have not only the large text boxes, but every search box spell checked.
  • general.smoothScroll
Strangely, this option has to be enabled from here instead of the preference pane. When you enable it, the page will smooth scroll.
  • Weird bonuses!
Typing about:robots will redirect you to a strange funny page… about robots! And typing about:mozilla will show you an extract of The Book of Mozilla.
There are tons of these kinds of tricks for Firefox, you are invited to add the ones you know!
