When Microsoft released its Office 2007 software, they also released a new format, DOCX. Unless otherwise specified, Office 2007 will save all word documents as DOCX. For example, if you want your word document saved in the DOC format, you will need to use the “Save As” function and select the appropriate format.
If you have saved word documents in the DOCX format and wish to convert them to the DOC format, there are several available methods. These come in handy if you are sharing the documents with someone using on of the previous releases of Microsoft Office.

- Compatibility Pack – Microsoft offers a compatibility pack. This pack includes functionality that allows opening, editing and saving documents with the DOCX format even if you are using an older version of Microsoft Office.
- OpenOffice.Org – OpenOffice.Org has another converter, but this one requires the use of a download if you want the conversion to work.
