Personally, I prefer the current no-nonsense Gmail interface. I must admit that having to return to gmail to read email day-in day-out and being confronted with the same interface makes me long for spice and variety. It is a good thing there are greasemonkey scripts available to spice things up.
Greasemonkey is an add-on of Mozilla firefox(another internet browser) which enables people to install scripts which will make changes to most web pages that are html based. These changes are made every time a page is loaded which in effect made the changes permanent.
Here are 4 greasemonkey scripts which will spice up your Gmail interface and gives you a smarter look:
1. Gmail air skin
If your operating system is Windows XP, there is a way to change the look and type of fonts by using the anti-aliasing effect. In order to do this you have to go to Desktop properties ->appearance tab->effects->use..smooth edges->clear type. Download here
2. Google mail customize
This is a very useful script if you do not want to see ads, bookmarks, labels, invites, low bar and footer that accompanies Gmail. In addition, this script will also widen your email body and changes the background of your email lines which has white as its default color. What is more, this is very easy to configure since you only set 1 for yes and 0 to no. Download here
3. Gmail full width
This script will remove the advertisement block located at the right side so as to make your conversation window occupy the whole width. Placed conveniently side by side with the conversation title are many links above the ads. Download here
4. New Skin Enhanced Black
Yet another way to give an enhanced black cool look for your Gmail. If you dont want to install the user scripts then there is a firefox add-on that lets you change the looks of your Gmail, thus improving its appearance. Still another option to give you cool skins for Gmail. Download here
