A lot of people dream to work at home. One is always more comfortable at home as the environment isn’t as tense as it is in the office. At home you can be more carefree as there are no rules and regulations to adhere to but yours. You can eat whenever you want or listen to music however loud it is while you are working. You don’t have to rush through the morning and face the traffic on the way to work since all you have to do is get up and from bed and walk over to your designated work area at home; so no more worrying about being late and making excuses to your boss. You control your time as your schedule tends to be much more flexible.
You’ve always thought that working at home would lead to you being a happier and more productive employee. But without your boss around to tell you exactly what to do, the responsibility of keeping yourself productive all throughout the day falls solely unto you.
And it’s not easy to keep yourself productive when there are many possible distractions at your residence. There is the temptation of spending too much time on Facebook or Twitter, watching TV, taking a nap, or having too much break time in general. Family, friends, or housemates may also be present and they may prove to be quite a disturbance to your work. So if you think about it, working at home is not all that easy. You may be more relaxed at home but that doesn’t mean that you will be able to get more work done.
Here are some tips to help you in making the most out of your work day at home:
Focus on the task at hand
At home, it is easy to get distracted especially because there is no one to monitor what you are doing. You may take advantage of the fact that your boss isn’t present which may lead you to spending much time on non-work related activities and simply put off your work. It is tempting to go to the mall in the morning and just work in the afternoon when you get back. But doing this would also mean that you still have to finish your work, which may result to longer work hours. The main challenge to working at home is to keep focus on the task at hand. Before you decide to grab a snack or catch some fresh air, you should make sure that your current task gets done first. Block out all distractions and keep your mind on what needs to be done. Forget about checking Facebook for now as you can surely do that later.
Emphasize the fact that you are working
There will always be people who will eat up some of your work time; may it be them trying to chat casually with you on the computer or on the phone or personally dropping by at your residence. They wouldn’t be able to do this normally when you are in the office, but they wouldn’t mind doing so when you are at home since they know that nobody is keeping tabs on you. This won’t happen if you would nicely let them know that you aren’t free to talk even if you are just staying at home. Remind them that you are still working and emphasize that you still have a lot of tasks that need to be done. Clearly explain to them your situation and they would certainly bother you less and less or won’t do so completely. Just tell them that you are free come 5:00.
Designate an hour as your break time
Even if you are working at home, a break from work is still a good idea. Just because you are sitting on a sofa as you work doesn’t mean that you don’t need nor deserve a break. You should designate something like a lunch break, ideally an hour. An hour is enough to help you moderately unwind and revitalize yourself without losing your momentum. A break in the middle of your work day will help you to be more productive for the rest of the day. Setting and following a daily schedule religiously is also recommended as it provides you with more discipline in your work at home.
Maintain contact with your co-workers
One detriment to working at home may be the loss of personal interaction with your co-workers at the office. A lot of people who work at home miss the brief chit-chats and small talk at work. The accessibility of your co-workers anytime when you had a problem or a question is also lost. Co-workers can be real convenient and helpful in accomplishing your job, so the loss of contact is heavily missed by some. But working at home doesn’t necessarily mean that you are totally cut off from the rest of your office. Try to phone them occasionally at the office instead of just sending them emails. Keeping in touch with them through messenger programs is also an option to maintain a somewhat personal relationship with them. You should beware that chatting with them a bit too much can cause you to be less productive.
