A few months ago, Wordpress has updated its website with the release of WordPress 2.8. However, upon its release there have been a few complaints from WordPress bloggers which led to the question of how long must a blogger wait before WordPress can be upgraded when a new version is out.
Normally, WordPress tests all its upgrades before releasing them to the WordPress community. With the easy added feature of a click of button to upgrade it and the annoying tag that keeps on reminding you to upgrade your WordPress account, people will really update their blogs immediately.
WordPress, however, upon each release of a new version causes changes in the plugins, the themes that a blogger uses and the codes which are very frustrating to a WordPress blogger. Upgrading the themes or plugins after your WordPress has been upgrades can also cause bigger problems. The iThemes team also discussed the upgrading of WordPress in their post, When Should I Upgrade WordPress? which also included things that you should do before you upgrade your WordPress account:
1. Make a backup of your data- First make a backup of all the data on your blog. WordPress reminds you to do that before you upgrade but most people don’t listen to it. The easiest way to do it is to go to Tools, Export and Save an XML data which will save all the blogs, posts, tags etc.
2. Upgrade all the plugins you use- Plugins and themes should be upgraded first before the WordPress upgrade to avoid further problems with it.
3. Visit the websites of plugin and theme authors- By coordinating with the theme authors, you can ask them the codes for the themes that you are currently using. They should have a code that’s compatible with the new release. The same goes for plugins.
4. Disable all your plugins- After upgrading the plugins, disable them first before doing the WordPress upgrade. Reactivate them after the WordPress upgrade is complete.
5. Ask yourself if you really need an upgrade- WordPress is still WordPress. New upgraded versions are still the same with just a few new features so ask yourself first if you really want an upgrade.
Also wait for feedback and comments about the new version before you ,yourself upgrades your WordPress and if you really want to safely test it out, make another WordPress account which can serve as your test site. Put in all the same plugins, themes, etc. which you have used in your original blog and test out the upgraded version. When all is okay, you can then ugrade your WordPress to 2.8.
